Chameleon
by Kathy Byers & Lydia Adams Davis

I come from Madagascar
Living high among the trees
My tail clings to the branches
I have pincers on my feet

When I search for my mate
My colors change from deep within
I turn bright hues of light
‘Cause I am Chameleon

When the mate I meet ’s not for me
I turn deep brown shades not grey
Colors dark show how I’m feeling
I won’t welcome you my way

When I search for my mate
My colors change from deep within
Colors tan, pale and gray
‘Cause I am Chameleon

I’m unique! I can speak!
Through the wonders of my skin
Blending in the world I’m in
‘Cause I am Chameleon

I am shy and do stress easy
I prefer to live alone
My mood is peaceful, calm and breezy
Safely high in my tree home

When I fear for my space
My colors change from deep within
Blue and green, deep and teal
‘Cause I feel Chameleon

My swivel eyes can scope two places
One keeps guard, one spies my prey
Step by step I beam the branches
Then I shoot my tongue its way

In a snap! I can zap!
A caterpillar in a distant tree
Sticky gum on tip of tongue
Reels an unsuspecting snack to me

I come from Madagascar
Blushing softly in the trees
Changing colors with each feeling
There’s no other one like me

I’m unique! I can speak!
Through the wonders of my skin
Blending in the world I’m in
‘Cause I am Chameleon
